THE APOSTLES

Jesus personally chose twelve ordinary men—mostly fishermen, a tax collector, and others—to be His closest followers, called the Twelve Apostles. They included Simon Peter (the rock), his brother Andrew, James and John (sons of Zebedee), Philip, Bartholomew, Thomas, Matthew, James son of Alphaeus, Thaddaeus (also called Judas son of James), Simon the Zealot, and Judas Iscariot—who later betrayed Him (Matthew 10:2–4; Mark 3:16–19; Luke 6:13–16).

After Judas Iscariot’s betrayal and death, the remaining apostles chose Matthias by lot to restore the number to twelve (Acts 1:15–26). These men walked with Jesus, witnessed His miracles and teachings, and after His resurrection and ascension were sent out as His witnesses to spread the gospel to the world—forming the foundation of the early church (Matthew 10:1–4; Acts 1:8).
